CESSATION OF HOSTILITIES BY THE NIGER DELTA AVENGERS

Recently, it was announced that the Niger Delta Avengers, Nigeria's latest militants, have decided to cease hostilities.

This is due to the fact that some Niger Delta elders led by Chief Edwin Clark, in a meeting on Friday, prevailed on them to dialogue with the Federal Government. They had earlier rejected talks with the government.
The importance of this action cannot be overstated. The activities of the Niger Delta Avengers which include blowing up oil and gas installations have hampered our oil exports and reduced power generation to less than 1000 megawatts, thus crippling the economy. This move is perhaps a pointer to the possibility of a peaceful end to hostilities in the Niger Delta region unlike the Book Haram militants who refused dialogue. All sides should be ready to make concessions and ensure that the best is gotten from this opportunity.
It should be remembered that other militant groups also exist. Steps should be taken to prevent them from wreaking havoc.

  1. What Pains me the most is that these terrorist tend to devalue and degrade their communities all in the name of their anger towards the government. Dialogue still remains the best option to apply in settling these disputes whether we like it or not.
