TODAY IN HISTORY

On this day in the year 1949,

The treaty creating the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) went into effect.
NATO was a military pact formed by pro Western countries in support of capitalism to prosecute the cold war against the Soviet Union and its allies in support of communism. The equivalent of NATO to Russia and its allies was WARSAW.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, WARSAW equally collapsed but NATO has continued to exist. It took part in the war against terrorism in Afghanistan and the Libyan civil war.
