On this day in the year 1980,
Zimbabwe became a member of the United Nations.
Zimbabwe is a Southern Africa country which gained its independence from Britain in the same year. It has been ruled by only one leader, Robert Mugabe, from independence to date. Its economic state is so poor that it stopped using its own currency because it became irrevocably valueless and began to use the US Dollar as its currency. It played an active role in support of the fight against apartheid in South Africa.
