ON GOVERNOR BEN AYADE'S DECISION TO LEGALIZE STREET HAWKING

Today, the Cross River state governor, Prof. Ben Ayade announced plans to legalize street hawking through the Hawkers' Rights Bill.

He alludes his decision to the current economic situation and the fact that a person should not be denied the right to make a living from that form of business. The governor must be commended at least for the show of compassion. However, it must be noted that the street hawkers actually at times constitute a nuisance to the public. The hawkers could cause traffic gridlock, steal from vehicle occupants through the windows of their vehicles and are easy way of executing terrorist attacks like bomb blasts.
Hence, while legalizing street hawking, the governor should put in place certain measures to check the excesses of this class of people. This is to ensure that while they have their rights, they do not trample on the rights of motorists because one man's right stops where another's starts.
