Former Group Managing Directors (GMDs) met with the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, where they stated that, given certain realities, the current fuel price which stands at 145 Naira per litre is no longer sustainable.
Frankly, I think those people should keep silent and remain in retirement rather than coming out to make such statements. Nigeria is now officially in a recession; prices of things have gone up; businesses are closing down; jobs are being lost everyday and there is general hardship in the land. In fact the price of fuel was even increased less than 4 months ago. With all these problems, they are still advocating for an increase in fuel price. Have they no sympathy for the ordinary Nigerian? Do they want to inflict more hardship on citizens? Of course, these people calling for a hike are wealthy and can survive the effect of such a drastic action. It isn't even for the best. I'm not an economist but I know that in Nigeria, history has shown that increasing fuel price always leads to inflation. That in itself is a problem, yet these people are clamouring for it.
In all of this, the income of workers remains the same. That means more suffering. What this set of "important" people should be clamouring for is an increase in salaries of workers in the light of present realities. They should take a cue from Access Bank which increased its staff salaries to meet the current hardship. President Buhari said a committee was set up to review workers' wages, we're yet to see its report.
It is bad enough that the country is experiencing difficulties at the moment, with the ordinary man being the hardest hit. Surely, economic policies must be put in place to address the difficulties. However, these policies must be given a human face.
