EXTENDING SCHOOLS RESUMPTION; WHY CAN'T WE TACKLE REAL ISSUES?
The Ministry of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), recently postponed the resumption of schools within the FCT for two weeks.
Why? For Sallah break. Really? There are only two days for Sallah- September 11 (Eid al-Adha) and September 13 (Eid el Kabir). Most schools are supposed to resume on the 5th of September. There would have been at least one week before the festivities. Why is the minister postponing resumption when other states are not? Is Abuja more Muslim than Nasarawa or Kaduna? Other states will not wait for the FCT. The academic calendar of other states has started and external exams will still be held at the same time across the country. The likely result is that students will be rushed to complete their scheme of work.
That directive is clearly uncalled for and unnecessary. The country is in an official recession; there are decayed infrastructures and there is hardship everywhere. Yet, what we are doing is postponing resumption of schools. There is nothing wrong in granting public holiday for Sallah. But two days would have been okay, rather than giving two weeks. If we must move forward in this country, we must prioritize our needs.
