What is now known as Jumia started of as a site called Kasuwa, with the vision of helping Lagosians and Nigerians in general shop easier without having to face road traffic.
After a few days of business in June 2012, Kasuwa got funding from Rocket Internet.
The name, Kasuwa was changed to Jumia due to legal issues. By September, 2012, Jumia merged with the online fashion store known as Sabunta.
Another origin story of Jumia is that it was founded to imitate the e-commerce giant Amazon and replicate its services in Africa. According to Wikipedia, “The business
was founded in 2012 by a team that included Jeremy Hodara, Sacha Poignonnec, Tunde Kehinde, Raphael
Afaedor, and Leonard Stiegeler, with funding from Rocket Internet.”
Early in 2015, both co-founders and co-CEO's resigned to pursue other ventures. They were succeeded by Nicolas Martins and Jeremy Doutte. Initially starting with 3 employees, Jumia grew its staff strength to 1500 with a fleet of over 500 vehicles, delivering to locations all over Nigeria. They are also in other African
countries such as Egypt, Morocco, Kenya, Ivory Coast, Uganda, Ghana, Cameroon and Tanzania. Jumia claims to be the largest online retail store in Nigeria with 18 delivery hubs scattered around the major cities in Nigeria and deliveries to all 36 states in Nigeria.
Jumia.com.ng is visited by over 700,000 guests weekly making it the 4th most viewed local content site in Nigeria and it has a wide assortment of over 100,000 products. Jumia Nigeria boasts of a subscriber base of over 1,000,000 people with Substantial Month to Month Growth,
