The budget padding controversy is certainly not over. Honourable Abdulmumin Jibrin had accused the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara and many other members of the House of Representatives of padding the 2016 budget.
As the House of Reps resumed, we definitely expected some fireworks, that's what played out today.
Chairman of the House Committee on Rules and Business, Emmanuel Orker- jev, moved a motion on breach of his privilege and that of the House by the embattled former Chairman of the Appropriations Committee. This was opposed by members of the Transparency Group loyal to Hon. Jibrin who shouted "no", "no", " no". Speaker Dogara's loyalists started shouting in solidarity with Dogara. It appears that it was an attempt to sanction Jibrin. It only ended up in a rowdy session.
While all these are going on, the country is having bigger problems. We are going through tough economic times. There is hardship in the land and we're in a recession. In the Senate, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki was providing suggestions on the way forward like the selling of National assets. That is the way to go.
The members of the House of Reps must realize that there are more pressing issues and act based on them. They must understand the priority of the moment and spend less time on less important things.
