The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recently announced that, ahead of the September 10 Governorship election in the state, that out of 1.7 million voters in the state, about 490000 permanent voter cards (PVCs) are yet to be collected.
That is roughly about 30% of the total number of voters. Without the PVC, there is no way a person can vote.
This shows the level of lack of concern by the people about who leads them. Funny enough, it is the same people who went to register in the first place. What then was the need for registering in the first place? Right from last year, INEC has always been calling on people to collect their voter cards. The truth is that the number of people who will eventually come out to vote will even be less than the number of those who have collected their PVCs already. Some people just collect their cards for identification purposes.
It is important that we as Nigerians, and Edo people especially, know the importance of exercising their franchise. If we complain about a certain government and we see a candidate who we think may do better, it is not enough to drum up support for that person. We must exercise our franchise. Remember, people beget the kind of leaders they have. Collect your PVC today!
