WASTE: NIGERIA'S UNDERUTILIZED GOLDMINE- BY MARK OMODIA (GUEST WRITER SERIES)

Until recently, the nation fixed its gaze on oil as its major and arguably only source of revenue.
We are too carried away by our search for mines and oil wells that we forget that there are several other sources of revenue which would not only make us rich but self-sufficient. One of such is Waste management.

Before I go any further, it is worth noting that some companies and government agencies have ventured into the field and some are making strides. However, there is much room for improvement and more players in the game. There are still several areas where people dump refuse on the road or in a stream or river. Streets are dirty and smelling.
Those who don't want to dispose refuse indiscriminately resort to burning which causes air pollution and global warming. While it is true that people are stubborn and don't heed to instructions not to dispose refuse indiscriminately, the sad truth is that most time, they don't have a better alternatives. This is where Waste management companies come in. Waste would always be produced and there would always be the need to dispose of it. Thus there is a constant market that would only increase as the population rises. On the other end, recycled products could be sold to various industries that require such items. Plus there are so many things that could be recycled from waste, from organic to inorganic. That is also another source of revenue. Then of course, they would be doing us a huge favor in helping keep the nation clean.
Companies such as Waste Management Inc, Republic Services, Waste connections, etc., rake in millions of dollars yearly from waste, from disposing to recycling.
Waste management on a large scale requires a lot of capital and logistics. it is therefore understandable if not many people venture into it. And as earlier stated, some people are stubborn and they would not patronize waste management companies, especially if asked to pay fees.
Government at all levels should put policies in place to encourage proper waste management and there are already, they should put measures in place to enforce such policies. State and local governments should take a cue from LAWMA in Lagos and Individuals should take a cue from wecyclers (also in Lagos), Richbol, etc.
One thing is for sure, there might be a lot involved in running a waste management company, but the profits are immense and the if the sector is managed well in the country, the pros would always outweigh the cons.
