Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi II, perhaps in reaction to the secession calls and that of resource control by some groups in the Niger Delta region, stated that Nigeria is better off with Lagos state than with the Niger Delta.
He explained his position by saying that Lagos is largely independent of oil and that the future of oil is bleak. Though he downplayed what he said by stating that every part of the country is important, but that we should not be obsessed with a resource (oil).
Even though Emir Sanusi might have meant no harm, he should nevertheless be cautious of his choice of words. It is extremely wrong to make such a comment. Inasmuch as Lagos has made commendable economic strides, Nigeria has gotten most of its revenue from oil. That oil is gotten from the Niger Delta. If Lagos was more important, why is Nigeria grappling with the effects of the slump in oil prices? Why is President Buhari ordering oil exploration in the North? Great Nigerians have also come from the Niger Delta.
The statement is capable of reducing the worth of one part of Nigeria against another. We should learn to watch our language while passing a message.
