ON ROTIMI AKEREDOLU'S VICTORIOUS EMERGENCE AS APC ONDO GOVERNORSHIP CANDIDATE

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo state finally selected selected its flagbearer for the November 16 gubernatorial election.
This has come after months of politicking, accusations and counter-accusations.
There were a lot of allegations of imposition of persons leveled against the APC national leader, Ahmed Bola Tinubu by members of Ondo state APC chapter like Tunji Abayomi. Tinubu denied imposing any aspirant but admitted supporting a candidate, Dr Segun Abraham.
The drama took a sudden turn when the chairman of the APC, Ondo state chapter, was removed by members of the party in the state because of his loyalty to Tinubu.
Clearly, members were opposed to Tinubu's choice as they demonstrated it during the primaries. Rotimi Akeredolu, former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), won the primaries; defeating other aspirants including Tinubu's choice.
If the allegation of imposition is true, then Akeredolu's victory is the defeat of imposition. It is the victory of popular choice over personal interests. Given his experience in elections, he may not be a bad pick afterall. However, the battle is not yet over. Fences must be mended within the party in order for their chances to be higher at the polls. They should remember that they have other hurdles to cross; they have to defeat other parties, including the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP).
