It is good to have our legislators back from their two months recess. Only God knows if they used it to better the lot of their constituencies.
However, a lot has happened since they went on recess. It will be interesting to know if they will address those issues and how things will play out.
The allegations of budget padding leveled against Speaker Yakubu Dogara and other principal members of the House of Representatives by Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin over the recess may be a burning issue. Especially with Jibrin's call for the Speaker's resignation. How will things play out on the floor of the house?
During the two months recess, Nigeria officially entered into a recession. The economy has gotten worse. The exchange rate has moved from around 370 Naira per Dollar to about 415 Naira per Dollar. How will the National Assembly deliberate on this issue?
During the recess, Nigeria had a poor outing at the Olympics. We won only one bronze medal. We were characterized by poor funding and inadequate preparation right from the opening ceremony where Team Nigeria didn't wear any ceremonial costume to the poor accommodation given to the athletes. Team Nigeria became a charity case as a Japanese billionaire donated money to the players. This is obviously a blemish on the ministry of sports. Will the National Assembly deliberate on this too?
These and perhaps more issues should be discussed urgently. All the same, welcome back.
