Chief John Odigie-Oyegun and Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu, both former governors, have known each other for quite sometime.
Their relationship dates back to the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) days in the 90s. In fact, Oyegun's emergence as the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman was linked to Tinubu's support.
The just concluded Ondo state APC governorship primaries is one that has created wounds yet to heal. Tinubu's preferred candidate didn't emerge as winner. For some time nobody heard from Tinubu, perhaps he had accepted defeat. That was until yesterday when his media office came out to allege tampering of the delegates list during the primaries. More so, he alleged that the APC National Chairman, Odigie-Oyegun, decided to upturn the decision of the majority to cancel the primaries during a meeting of the National Working Committee of the APC considering the report of the appeal panel. Now Tinubu is calling for Oyegun's removal.
If that allegation is true, then it should be a ground for sanctioning Oyegun. However, it is curious that Tinubu's candidate accepted defeat. That means it is either someone is being a sore loser or he has facts which weren't known before. Not long ago, some aspirants who also lost out had passed a vote of no confidence on Oyegun. Perhaps they were thinking in the same line with Tinubu.
THE CALL FOR OYEGUN'S REMOVAL
Is removal the appropriate sanction for such an offence? Perhaps. However it will make the APC Chairmanship become unstable like that of the PDP, especially now that it (APC) is the ruling party. Various undercurrents will be at play with the capacity of tearing the party further apart. Given Tinubu's influence in the APC, it will be interesting to see how this issue will play out. Will Tinubu be able to garner enough support to unseat Oyegun? They may end up just settling it amicably as politicians do. All that may be required is appeasement. However, that is if this matter is settled amicably.
One thing I expect to be done is for Oyegun to respond to these allegations. Not to attack Tinubu, but at least to clear his name if truly he's not guilty. For Tinubu to openly turn against his long time friend, we may as well give him the benefit of doubt.
